Daniel Stanislawski was born in Bellingham, Washington on April 20, 1903. He moved with his family to Berkeley around the start of World War I, and in 1934, after several jobs and a year in Mexico, he enrolled at the age of 31 as a freshman at UC Berkeley, majoring in anthropology, then geography. In 1935, he married Doris Barr and they had two children, Michael and Anna. In 1937 he began graduate studies in the Geography Department focusing on historical geography, and in 1944 received his Ph.D. from Berkeley. Stanislawski served as professor at the University of Texas from 1949 to 1963, when he became chair of the Geography Department at the University of Arizona in Tucson until his retirement and return to Berkeley in 1974. He was made an associate member of his old department and continued research and writing, sometimes in fields unrelated to historical geography, until his death on July 12, 1997.
